"Foreign Exchanges" by Dorit Cypis
Individuals from amongst the public attending the Rose Bowl Market were hired to carry a picket sign around the Market grounds. The public were asked to choose a picket sign from amongst several available, for increments of 5 minutes for $1 hire; 15 minutes for $2 hire. Optionally, for $1 hire, they may choose to pose for a photo holding a picket sign of their choosing. They may choose to buy back a copy of this photo, to be sent to them digitally, for $2.

David from THINK AGAIN here. Thanks to everyone who has contacted us regarding possible sites for our mobile projection project entitled THE NAFTA EFFECT, which rolls out on October 7th. If you're in LA and there is a large blank, windowless building near you - a parking garage or a other such stucco swatch of wall - post it to the blog and we'll consider adding it to our route map (in progress). Also, check out our website www.saltinthewound.org as we'll be posting video as soon as we get it.

This project attempts to link ideas of fair trade to immigration policy - the hunt for cheap labor on the one hand coupled with xenophobic scapegoating and harassment of immigrant labor. The premise: powerful economies welcome the flow of poor, cheap, disenfrachized labor as long as migrants don't not achieve full protection under the law as citizens.

Fair Trade was inspired by contemporary artists whose performance-based practices infuse artistic production with community organizing. Interested in promoting creativity to a broader audience and building energetic relationships through cultural exchange, the projects are event-oriented, performative, and either participatory in nature or geared toward activating underutilized space. Each project is planned to occur at a site appropriate to the artist's proposals throughout Los Angeles.

"Haircuts by Children" is a whimsical performance that engages with the enfranchisement of children and trust in the younger generation, and invites contemplation of a very simple image: a child cutting an adult�s hair. The project continues the artists� exploration of an aesthetic of civic engagement, with the materials being a grade 5-6 class, a hair salon, and a brave, willing public.

"Haircuts by Children" will take place on October 14 and October 15 from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm at two different Highland Park salons:

Social Acupuncture: the art of civic engagement, a proposal and a demonstration.

Author Darren O'Donnell presents his book "Social Acupuncture," an extended essay outlining the possibility for a civically engaged artistic practice, and stages "Q&A," a simple performance game that introduces the concept of entreveillance � observation from between.

Fire in the Taco Bell

"Fire in the Taco Bell" is a one-day event with art components that will explore the idea of the autonomous zone and its possible repercussions on trade practices with friendly nations. The event will include a lecture on the politics of misunderstandings, the nature of evil, the spirit of creative dissent and the subtleties of fair commerce along with the presentation of video and objectual works pertinent to the conceptual structure of the event.

Further outreach will develop through site-specific projects that privilege public space and social interaction with local groups during the artists� 3-week residency in Los Angeles.

"Fire in the Taco Bell" will also feature the Los Angeles premiere of Renato Ornelas' feature film, "Cabecitas," produced by Revolcadero Films.

"Speak-Up LA" is a multilingual amplification of Los Angeles' diverse voices that expands the boundaries of everyday interaction. This dynamic, performative event will use spontaneous communication to activate public space. "Speak Up LA" encourages collaboration and creativity by plugging in a microphone, turning on a generator, hanging some lights, and inviting participants to share their ideas about borders, home and identity.

Fairs are associated with a celebration of the domestic and agricultural arts and sciences; "Fair Exchange" considers and celebrates the wonder of what is immediately around us, what is within and of our selves, our homes, our communities, and the objects and ideas we generate in an effort to identify, connect with, and enhance our relationships to ourselves and our communities.
